Microsoft and Kaspersky Lab have recovered from an error that caused significant e-mail troubles for some users of Microsoft’s Antigen e-mail security software.
Microsoft and Kaspersky Lab have recovered from an error that caused significant e-mail troubles for some users of Microsoft’s Antigen e-mail security software.

Antigen users started receiving updates for their Kaspersky Lab antivirus engine again on Tuesday. Microsoft and Kaspersky had put those on hold after a flawed update caused trouble last week, representatives for Microsoft and Kaspersky said Tuesday.

“As far as both parties are concerned, the problems have been addressed and its business as usual,” said Steve Orenberg, president of Kaspersky’s North American operations.

The problems left some people without fully functional e-mail systems for as long as 10 hours. The culprit was a routine update to the Kaspersky antivirus engine, which was distributed early Thursday morning. Microsoft in the afternoon offered the previous version of the engine for download to solve the problem.

“As soon as we were aware that our customers were experiencing e-mail problems due to the Kaspersky update, we escalated through the appropriate channels across Kaspersky and Microsoft, and were able to define, test and provide a resolution,” the Microsoft representative said in a statement.

Antigen, which Microsoft acquired when it bought Sybari, uses multiple antivirus engines. The product is used by about 10,000 organizations, a “small percentage” of which use the Kaspersky engine, the Microsoft representative said.

While halting the updates for the Kaspersky engine for several days meant that one engine wasn’t updated, users were still protected by the other engines and updates. Antigen can scan e-mail with up to five engines at the same time, according to the Microsoft Web site.

Microsoft recently announced a new beta test version of Antigen.

Microsoft plans to deliver antivirus technology to its enterprise customers in the future, a key Microsoft security executive confirmed Tuesday.

During the company’s monthly security briefing, a key security executive confirmed that Microsoft intends to make available for its large corporate accounts antivirus like the one that will be part and parcel of the Windows OneCare service for small businesses and home users that was unveiled May 13.

“We’ll have an enterprise version,” but Microsoft needs to offer centralized management capabilities before launching such a service for corporate customers, said Mike Nash, corporate vice president of Microsoft Security Business & Technology Unit. He declined to provide additional details about an enterprise version or when it would launch.

The Windows OneCare service, formerly code-named A1, is expected to move into its first round of beta testing this summer and full public beta later this year, Microsoft security executives said during the briefing on Tuesday.

Nash did not say when an enterprise version might be offered but one source familiar with its plans said it will not be ready before the next version of Windows code-named “Longhorn” unless there are major delays with the Windows upgrade, now scheduled to ship in 2006.

He added that Microsoft ( Microsoft antivirus) is considering releasing two “flavors,” of antivirus for corporate customers –one for Microsoft Business Solutions and another for enterprise customers as part of their various licensing schemes.

“That’s the MBS vs. Enterprise option in all probability. Enterprises will need to interface the service to asset management and load set image management and they’re not likely to agree to let Microsoft hit machines directly MBS [customers] may not care,” said the source, who declined to be named.

The Windows OneCare consumer service, which will go into testing this year, will provide PC protection through antivirus, antispyware, two-way firewall, backup and restore and tuning tools–is a new category for providing comprehensive PC security and health services.

With network growing companies reliance on IT increasing, issues such as viruses, spam, server integrity and reliability are of utmost importance. A small problem like spam can grow to the extent where your mail server crashes. Adware installed on systems can use up so much bandwidth that your server crashes, non-malicious viruses can gat your mail domain banned on the net. This is reality, what we have to offer ia a low cost solution that can help prevent or reduce your organizations vulnerability without complicating your network and incurring large costs.

wireless network security

In the past, wireless security concerns seemed exaggerated. Given the limited enterprise adoption of wireless LANs and mobile data, stories about researchers cracking wireless encryption codes in labs made a good read but hardly portended a widespread breakdown of network security.

Now users are buying WLAN gear and signing up for mobile data services in droves - often without consulting their IT departments. Suddenly, we are confronted with two problems. First, with users installing inexpensive WLANs and signing up for mobile data services on their own, there is a lack of consistent and well-planned security. Second, the rapid spread of wireless data products and services is creating security problems never before encountered.

Today, anyone can create a wireless network or wirelessly extend an enterprise network using inexpensive wireless routers and client adapters from major retail chains. But making it easier for hackers to access enterprise data is by no means the only security risk that companies face. Individuals intent on stealing music or uploading porn prefer to borrow someone else’s network. And unauthorized wireless nodes can cause interference to authorized nodes, disrupting network operations.

There is also a flip-side problem. Thanks to inexpensive wireless adapters and chipsets with integrated wireless, a growing percentage of notebook PCs support Wi-Fi. According to wireless network software vendor Cirond, notebook PCs connected to wire networks may broadcast data or provide back-door access if ad hoc wireless networking mode inadvertently is left on.

Cell phone-based mobile data is mushrooming. For years, vendors and analysts assumed the goal was wireless access to the Web and e-mail. Instead, the killer applications are downloading ring tones, games and screen savers, and exchanging text, picture and voice messages.

The good news is that mobile phone networks are closed systems. You can download new software for your handset - but only software approved by your service provider. Still, the freedom to send and receive text, picture and voice messages from virtually anywhere creates unique security problems.

For example, text messaging during meetings can be used for more than just arranging lunch dates. It’s also conceivable that cameras will become a standard feature on mobile phones. Consider the ramifications of employees and visitors having cameras with the ability to instantly transmit pictures to the Internet always at the ready.

A voice application of mobile data technology - push-to-talk service - could result in embarrassing interruptions and disclosures. Push-to-talk lets other users grab your attention by speaking over your push-to-talk handset’s loudspeaker without ringing or waiting for you to answer as you would a regular phone call. If you forget to turn this feature off, someone else may blurt out who-knows-what over your phone during a meeting, in front of a customer or in a packed elevator.

The good news is dozens of companies are springing up to address these and other wireless security issues. Let’s hope they do - and fast.
